We want you to come out and perform your verse from вЂStill TippinвЂ™.вЂ™вЂќ So I showed up, performed, it went great. I got a call from somebody in DestinyвЂ™s ChildвЂ™s camp who said, вЂњThis is the last DestinyвЂ™s Child show in Houston. Slim Thug: That was just a blessing that fell out the sky for me. What do you remember about the process of that song getting on the radio? Setaro: Speaking of radio, вЂњCheck On It,вЂќ the song you did with BeyoncГ©, wasnвЂ™t originally supposed to be a single. From radio to sales to everything, the independent album did better. When I do a show, the records off of Boss of All Bosses are bigger than the records I did on Interscope with Already Platinum. At the end of the day, the Boss of All Bosses project hadВ my biggest records. They promoted me worldwide, and I wanted to take advantage of that and say, let me go back independent with the worldwide promotion that Interscope gave me already and benefit off of that. Slim Thug: I just took advantage of the promotion they gave me. Did you change anything about the way you did business after seeing how Interscope ran their operation? Setaro: After one record on Interscope, you went back to being independent. We still sold mixtapes, but it just was nowhere like it used to be, so we had to change with the game. ThatвЂ™s part of the reason why I signed, because how we did it where we went and bought our own blank CDs, put the cover on it, packaged it at our houses, and distributed it ourselves through Greyhound or whatever it may be, we wasnвЂ™t able to take advantage of that like we used to. ThatвЂ™s what gave me the inspiration to realize I might need to go and get a deal.

It was definitely something we had to work through, and it was a big hit for us. Of course, that killed us and a lot of the other mom-and-pop stores around the world. Their pricesВ were low enough to be like wholesale to us. I also ownedВ two stores at the time, and we couldnвЂ™t survive through that, because we would have to go basically get our CDs from Best Buy. So that was a big blessing.Д«ut when the big stores like Best Buy came along with the $9.99 albums, the mom-and-pop stores couldnвЂ™t compete. We had a lot of Houston artists doing independent records not signing no major deal, because that was our outlet where we could get paid and go and pick up our check down the street. They wereВ kind of like a distributor, and could get your records all over the country. When we put out independent projects that were real albums, like the album with me and ESG, that was through Southwest Wholesale, which was located in Houston. Not only us by ourselves-let me not forget to mention Southwest Wholesale. When we first started in the game, we went city to city, town to town, and created a whole distribution network. Slim Thug:В That definitely slapped us hard. Early on,В you had a real close look at the effect big box stores had onВ smaller mom-and-pop record stores, because you were selling your musicВ to the mom-and-pop stores.
